Ok ... so where is winter and what have you done with them...? 😁

.... sneaky suspicion that winter could have sloped off to find reinforcements 🤔

Anyway, gorgeous day in the region folks, #staysafe and enjoy 😉

Sometimes we tend to concentrate too much on the technical side of what we do, what the weather is doing so here is a story to warm the cockles of your heart 😉, plus Freddie is too Uber cute NOT to share 🤣

Freddie’s Tale (or tail) you decide 🤔

Freddie, a Boston Terrier pup, was traveling with his mum, Rachel, in her car last Friday (1st Feb) to the pub to meet her boyfriend.

As you are aware the weather on Friday wasn’t overly clever that day, snow and freezing wind were making road conditions very tricky.

One of our senior responders and a group officer was on his way home from work, takes up the tale in his own words

“After leaving the Team Valley to go home up the A692 at a place called Watergate bends I passed a car with an obviously upset lone woman in the driving seat stuck on snow covered, icy hill”

“I stopped and offered her assistance she explained that she’d only been driving for less than a year so I got the towing eye from the boot and attached a strap to her car I gave her the handheld radio so I could talk to her and encourage her as she had never drove in snow or been towed before”

“As we went up the hill another car came down the hill skidding with his brakes locked on, he hit the car in front of us then came to a halt on his own side of the road on the curb, next to the Marquis of Granby public house”

As our responder manoeuvred round the stuck cars with Rachel in tow he also collected four more members of the public who had been forced to abandon their cars at the roadside in that section of the A692 as well.

He then dropped a very grateful Rachel and Freddie at their destination as well as two of the members of the public he’d collected proceeding to take the two remaining stranded drivers home to Marley Hill then,

“After dropping them off there was a young lad walking up the hill so stopped and gave him a lift to the Pack Horse.
Then I finally got home”

In Rachel’s words “What an amazing job you all do, I was panicked as I’m a new driver and I didn’t appreciate conditions to get so bad so quick, he was amazing, he kept me calm and I’m just so grateful”

Bearing in mind the responder had been working away from home in the Isle of White for nearly two weeks, he wasn’t on standby, this wasn’t a call out (We only “Stand to” when we are formally activated by one of our user bodies or there is a Red Weather Warning in place - though I stress that evening we were definitely very much on a heightened readiness to deploy), he didn’t have to stop and assist but this responder typifies the community minded spirit and drive that ALL of our volunteers possess, the simple desire to help where we can if it is safe to do so.

Well done!

4x4 Response North East is a not for profit, voluntary organisation that provides All Weather, All Wheel Drive logistical support to Category 1 and 2 responders (Emergency Services, NHS, Local Government & other voluntary sector organisations) during Severe weather events, major incidents and other emergencies when called upon to serve the community. We also provide logistics, safety and communications support to outdoor events and activities across the region.

We rely on the support of the public and charitable grants to continue to provide this service (hint hint 😉)

Thank you
